Cutting the education budget

A possible 18 billion-budget cut is what Texas is facing. State leaders are promising that there is not going to be a raise in taxes.  The reality is that they are going to cut budgets in some departments like education. Many teachers in the state are not surprised about these budget cuts. Some of them are trying to be positive and say that they will try to educate their students no matter what the budget is. Sadly, many educational employees will lose their jobs and this would affect our children directly. Having more than 40 kids in one class is definitely not a good idea.

Many teachers are expressing concerns about using textbooks that are out of date and also about not getting enough technology in the classrooms to teach kids effectively.  They are concerned that if other countries are providing technology to their students they are going to be ahead of our students. This is a big concern for citizens and also should be a concern for our government. Not educating our children for a competitive world will affect the country in the future. If we don’t have prepared citizens then our economy will not be able to remain competitive. The government needs to find a way to improve our state education and by cutting budget this is not going to be possible. Since our community is growing we need to make sure we are ready to educate more kids at all levels by having better books, better supplies, and also better prepared teachers.

  2. While reading my classmates’ blogs, I found one that caught my attention. The blog is by Rebecca Isla, and it talks about the possible budget cut in education in future years. What first caught my attention is the way she explained and gave some background about the Texas economy. She says,“ A possible $18 billion cut is what Texas is facing... the reality is that they are going to cut the budget in some departments like education.” Rebecca also says that it would affect teachers in the state of Texas, and some professor would be laid off or would be given 40 kids to teach. I found this idea very important because I know that with 40 kids in one classroom it would be impossible to give individual attention. It can also create great problems.

Rebecca also talks about teachers not getting enough technology in the classroom to teach kids effectively and that this is a big concern for citizens. I concur with this idea because I know that technology has become a big part of our lives nowadays and if we don’t teach our kids to use it, that can stop them from success in their future. Rebecca makes a great argument about why the Texas government should not cut the education budget.

  3. As reading this post I was so interested and totally agree with her opinion and points. Rebecca has allot of strong points and good examples. She provided us with the amount of money that is though to be the total cut, which is alarming! She also has the consequences of the short fall like it is to have 40 kids in a classroom and the use of old textbooks, which sets Texas back. Her concern for the community is real honest and I really liked that. I would have wanted to see a bit more writing and for her to go deeper on what some educators think of the budget short fall and what measures they can take and to explain her point of view a bit more. Over all I liked the information. :)

Going deeper on the subject and my point of view:

Just like Rebecca, I personally feel a concern because I am currently studying to graduate in the field of education to become a History/Government teacher and have a daughter that in a couple of years will need to attend school. I would hate to go through these four years of school studying something that I love and not be able to obtain a job. Education to me is very important and do not understand how our representatives expect teachers to give a high quality education and students to learn the material on an extremely short budget. I as a parent want my daughter to get an excellent education that will set her intellect standards high. We all need to understand that in order to become a better state we need communities with the best education.

My mother in law and I were talking about this subject over the week end, because she had just come back from a meeting with officials from the board of education for the county of Travis. She work for an elementary and the meeting consisted of making the teachers aware of certain changes that were going to occur next school years; budget cuts, employment reduction and a possible change in the school year classes. Teachers were told to save on what they could, this included copies, text books, supplies and to take care of items that could be reusable.

We all know the budget cut is coming, and not much could be done to avoid it. One good thing would be for our representatives to sit down and brainstorm of ideas of were to do the cut instead of education and health care because they would definitely hurt our future.
